Knox celebrated a big milestone recently: our 180th birthday! For those who do not know, our church started on November 10, 1844, back when this city was just a place called “Bytown”. We have had two other locations, before finally settling in on the corner of Elgin & Lisgar, and over the course of these 180 years, Knox had been a part of the community in each of these locations. Pastor Jim reminded us during his sermon that “in the Christian faith the church is not the star of the show, neither the church as the building or even the people. We are God’s people called to share the story of Jesus” who is the main focus, and through our church, we are able to spotlight this important truth.

While the congregation ate cake after the service, different people reminisced about Knox onto paper balloon cut-outs. On the balloon there were 3 sections (“remember”, “love”, and “hope for”), highlighting different parts of people’s perceptions of Knox. Here are some excerpts from the multitude of responses:

Remember:

  • “Chili day!”

  • “Being married here”

  • “Walking to church with Dad!”

  • “A time when I came with 2 uni friends and Jim remembered me after several months”

  • “My kids’ baptisms”

  • “Being welcomed by people at coffee hour”

  • “My kids’ excitement at being in the Christmas Pageant”

  • “Bazzars”

Love:

  • “The sermons always give me lots to think about…”

  • “Intergenerationality”

  • “Knox’s missional work in the local community”

  • “Stained glass + wood pews”

  • “The welcoming community”

  • “Coffee hour”

  • “Accessible door”

  • “Organ + Choir”

Hope for:

  • “Knox to warmly continue to welcome newcomers to the church”

  • “... to be wed here”

  • “Growth”

  • “Continued support for Out of the Cold and our downtown community”

  • “Renewal”

  • “World peace”

  • “Centre 120 not needed”

  • “A long life for Knox and the building”

Knox is blessed to have had such wonderful people worship with us, online and in person, over these past 180 years, and with God’s provision, we will continue to do so for many more years to come. Happy Birthday Knox!
