Walking Together

A series of six presentations is being sponsored by the tri-church aboriginal outreach team of the downtown Ottawa Presbyterian Churches in the context of St. Andrew’s Winter Wednesday Evenings. Participants meet at St. Andrew’s Church (82 Kent Street) at 6:00 PM for a light supper then proceed to their chosen presentations which are to conclude at 8:00 PM.

Here’s how the plans are shaping up.

March 9: Niigaanibatowaad: Front Runners, a film about the aboriginal torch runners for the 1967 Pan American Games and our following discussion will set the scene for the following sessions.

March 16: Garth Hampson will show slides as he talks about the lives of our native Canadians, particularly the children, as seen through his eyes as one of the last RCMP officers to use a dog team for police patrols.

March 23: Grandmother Irene Lindsay, the Elder at Minwaashin Lodge, an aboriginal centre for women on Catherine Street, will talk about First Nations traditions and how they contribute to healing today.

March 30: Jacquie Woodward from the Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa will talk about improving the outcomes for aboriginal families in Ottawa.

Also in the works:

  • Oallunaat: Why White People Are Funny Through this film we will learn the Inuit story through humour.
  • A presentation on the Inuit in Ottawa, the home of the largest Inuit community outside the Arctic.
  • Panel Discussion: Church people share their knowledge with us.

We would be delighted to have all interested people join us. You may register from the St. Andrew’s website and/or contact Sheila Selley for information or to register for individual sessions.
